Did you know....
- There are currently 225 homeless children, youth and young adults ages 21 and younger in Thurston County, Washington. (Homeless Taskforce Census Count 2007)
- Nationally experts estimate 60% of females & 25% of males who are homeless youth have been sexually assaulted prior to leaving home. (Cauce, 2004)
Research indicated that youth end up on the streets due to:
- Physical, sexual & emotional abuse.
- Family conflict or rejection due to education issues or homophobia.
- Drug & alcohol abuse in the home.
- Family's financial insecruity.
Pictures have been provided by youth and adult allies involved with Partners in Prevention Education.
Information that stood out from the 2007 Thurston County Point-in-time Homeless Census:
- 16% of those homeless were under the age of 18!
- 54% of homeless households cited poverty-related issues as reasons they became homeless.
- 63% of homeless individuals reported having a disability.
- 25% of homeless households become homeless since the last census one year ago.
- Less than 8% of homeless households last resided outside of Thurston County.
- 44% of homeless individuals reported having a mental illness.
The Annual Point-in-time Homeless Census Report for Thurston County is conducted by the Housing Authority of Thurston County on behalf of the Thurston County HOME Consortium
